Artists have always travelled. They sought inspiration in unfamiliar landscapes and other cultures. They encountered new ways of depicting and imagining the world. And they found Solutions to problems they hadn't even thought of. Time was not an issue. No matter how long it took them to get somewhere, there was always reward in the journey itself. Travelling wasn't merely about going from one place to another. It was just as much a mental experience as it was a physical effort. It was about transformation -transforming impressions into images, changing one thought into another.
Today, travelling has become a way of consuming the world. There are no empty places left on the world map. Every destination is seemingly within reach, and few take the time to actually travel with all senses engaged. Instead of getting familiar with the unfamiliar, we look for things we recognise. Too often, we try to shorten our journey, either in distance or in time. Impatience is the norm: are we there yet? We think it's time to slow things down again. Allow us to take you on board and expand your experience.
KLM - that's Kick Veldman, Lennart de Neef and Maxime Ansiau - is looking to open up new horizons.
By setting up artistic encounters, we can travel through generations, even through time. We exhibited our work next to JCJ yanderheyden and Mathieu Ficheroux, finding new connections along the way. And we're planning new exhibitions centred around the idea of travelling. It's in the DNA of KLM - whether as inspiration for new images, as a topic for our works or as a method of pushing the boundaries of our artistic practices. Our aim is to take our audience on a mental journey.
Forget flying, this is the way to go.
